What Is A Self-Hosted Blog And Why Is It Important?

Hey guys! Welcome back. I am so excited that you are here. Today I wanted to talk about self-hosting, what it means for you and your blog, and why overall it’s really important. Whether you are new to blogging or have been around for a while there are some really big benefits of having a blog that is self-hosted. So I wanted to share more about that today.

What is a self-hosted blog?

That’s the big question. If you don’t quite know what I mean be a self-hosted blog it is a website where you own the domain. If you have started a WordPress site you know that you have the option to do a free website, but your domain will have .wordpress in it. So having a self-hosted blog and purchasing it through one of their plans is the best way to go.

It doesn’t cost as much as you might think. You can look at their plans and decide which one is best for you. And you only pay once a year, so you don’t have to worry about a monthly payment. But this allows you to own your domain and have a self-hosted blog. You can also do this through other blog platforms if you have a different one.

If you are new to blogging and just trying it out, having a free domain might be the best way to go for a while. I had the free domain for quite a while when I first started. But if you are getting serious about blogging and you are ready to take things to the next level, having a self-hosted blog has many benefits.

It looks more professional.

If you are looking to potentially turn your blog into a side hustle or you just have a really big passion for your blog doing well, having a self-hosted blog is the way to go. It makes you look more professional and it shows that you are really passionate and all in on your blog. Having that .wordpress in your blog domain doesn’t look very professional. And if you aren’t looking to be professional you don’t have to worry about that.

But if you are wanting to step up your blogging game and have a more professional look, the best way to start is by purchasing your domain and hosting your own blog. Your readers can tell if you are using a free platform and sometimes it does have an impact on whether they stick around or not. They may not take you as seriously if they see that you aren’t willing to invest in your own blog.

You have more options.

When you purchase even the cheapest WordPress plan available you are already getting more options than you would would the free domain. There are more themes available to you. You have more options as to what you want your blog design to look like. Overall you just have more available to you. I definitely think that’s worth the purchase of your domain. You are buying so much more.

When you go self-hosted, you are getting the options that you didn’t have available to you. You get to control your design, your theme, your colors, and so much more. Who wouldn’t want that? It doesn’t cost that much and you are able to get so much out of it. It goes back to looking professional as well because once you have more options available to you you are able to make it look a bit more professional.

You have more control.

One of the biggest and best benefits of having a self-hosted blog is how much more control you have. And this goes beyond just the options of design. You get so much more flexibility with a self-hosted blog. You can choose from thousands of themes which is great. But you also get to control the footers, the ads, and you can install plugins that help your blog grow even more.

You can also monetize your blog. Since you own it, you get to choose what you do with it. With a free domain you don’t really have that option. Brands don’t really like to sponsor blogs that don’t have their own domain. People usually don’t take opportunities to work with bloggers using a free domain. So if you are looking to monetize your blog in any way, you must first invest in it on your own.

And that is what a self-hosted blog is and some reasons why it is important. Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed this. Please like it if you did. Get Help Setting Up Your WordPress Blog And Theme

Hi there! Welcome back to Blog Savvy Coaching. I am here today to help you hopefully set up your WordPress blog and get it ready to go live! I am by no means an expert, but having done this for a while I do have some tips and tricks that I feel you might find useful. So I’m super excited to be able to share those with you.

Pick your blog name.

The very first thing you need to do is figure out what you want your blog name to be. It can be changed, but if you can avoid changing it in the future I would. So take some time to brainstorm some ideas and figure out which one suits you and the message you are trying to send out the best. It’s helpful to have a few ideas and narrow it down from there.

Your blog name can include your name or be something else altogether. It’s completely up to you. There are pros and cons to both, so that’s something worth looking into if you are curious. But your blog name is something that sets the stage for how your blog is perceived by others. You want something that is easy to remember and that can be put into a URL.

Figure out what you want your blog to look like.

From color scheme to overall design, there are a couple of ways you can do this. You can start with brainstorming some ideas and things you want in your blog design or you can get on WordPress and look at the themes and play around that way. Just like the name you choose, the design and theme you choose also matters.

It’s important to pick something that you like and represents you, but also that is easy to navigate and looks clean and put together. It doesn’t have to be super professional, but it needs to be something that your readers and followers can go to with minimal issues. I know from personal experience if a site takes too long to load or is hard to navigate I don’t stick around.

Customize your theme.

Once you have played around and chosen your theme, it’s time to customize your site to suit you. Choose colors that you like and that represent you. Don’t choose yellow if you hate yellow. If you aren’t sure yet, you can always go for neutral and choose later. Once you have chosen colors and pictures that personalize your blog it’s time to move on to actual writing.

Make sure that your blog’s name is somewhere at the top. You should also have a space under that for a tagline. This is where you will give a short description of your blog. It can be what your blog is about, when you will be posting, or even something about you. Choose something that is honest and that you think readers might be interested in.

Once you start writing you will create categories (or at least you should). Once you do that you can go in and add those categories to the menu. You just go under the “Customize” tab on the side. That will help readers find specific content they are interested in much easier. So make sure you have as many categories as possible, but be specific.

Posts you should always have.

There are some posts that I think are important for every blog to have. One is your “About Page”. You have the option to title this whatever you would like, but this post is quite literally all about you. It can be as long or as short as you would like it to be. Talk about you, your blog, what it’s about, why you started, and anything else you feel is relevant.

Also, it’s important to have a “Contact Page”. Again, this is whatever you think is relevant. If you have an email specific to your blog you can include that. Also, include any social media links that you have created for your blog. You can also include any personal accounts that you have if you feel inclined to do so.

Add anything else you feel is necessary.

You are in complete control of your blog. You can add things and take away things as you see fit. One of the best things about having your own blog and website is that there is no one telling you what to do or what not to do. You get to make those choices. So go through and look at your blog and see what you would like to add. Make it your own!

If you want to add more, then do it. If you feel some things aren’t necessary you can take them away. Just make your blog true to you and you will start seeing your community grow in ways you never thought possible. You don’t have to have everything else that someone else has and you can have things that they don’t have.

Make your blog live!!!

Once you have customized your blog to your heart’s content go ahead and double check to make sure that everything looks the way you want it to and that you have all the things you want to have and then you are all set to make your blog live! So go ahead and publish your blog for the world to see and the celebrate! It’s a big moment!

It’s important to remember though that you will only get what you put in. So be consistent, stay true to who you are, and don’t forget to promote yourself and your blog. Don’t let all that hard work be for nothing. Set up social media accounts for your readers to follow and don’t forget to actually post on them!

And those are my tips for setting up a WordPress blog and theme! I really hope you find this helpful! Hopefully these tips help you at least get started in a good direction.
